Last week’s Ligue 1 matches threw us some tantalising results as Nice beat PSG to almost hand Monaco the title and bottom team Bastia throwing themselves an unlikely lifeline with victory at home over Rennes.
There’s only 3 weeks left in Ligue 1 and we still don’t know who will face the drop. We do know that any of the 5 bottom teams could be playing Ligue 2 next year unless they get some good results quicky! It looks depressing this week for the bottom 2, Nancy and Bastia, as they face the top 2 teams, PSG and Monaco!
At the top we saw Monaco pull 3 points clear with a game in hand still to play. It would be a massive shock if they didn’t win the title now. Nice beating PSG 3-1 last week gave them hope of finishing in 2nd position and securing a straight Champions League spot next season.
They need help though. The real fight is for 4th spot and the promise of Europa League football next season. Lyon, Bordeaux and Marseille are in the running and only 2 points seperate the 3 sides. It’s going right down to the wire!

Guingamp v Dijon (Saturday 7pm)
Guingamp (10th) are in a fairly poor run of form after a promising start to the season. They have only managed 3 goals in their previous 6 matches. Although this led to 2 victories! The other 4 defeats have seen them fail to score a goal. They will look to score this week at home against a Dijon (17th) team who have only managed 1 clean sheet in their previous 10 matches.
Guingamp may be complacent though as they are mid table and really nothing much to play for other than a top half finish. Dijon on the other hand are in must win territory. They will know that a win here could well be enough to secure Ligue 1 football for next season. Winning has been difficult lately though with only 1 victory in 10 matches.
Guingamp are hot and cold at the moment so we see this as a draw, perhaps either side squeezing out a narrow victory.
Lorient v Angers (Saturday 7pm)
Lorient (16th) have really come good at the right time as they forced their way from bottom of the table to now have real hope of surviving the drop as they currently sit one point clear of the relegation teams. They have won 4 of their last 6 matches scoring 13 goals in the process.
They will relish this weeks tie against an Angers (14th) side who seem to have given up lately! Angers have lost 6 of their last 7 matches. They are in free fall, but should be safe from the drop. Lorient have home advantage but they do have a shaky defence which Angers should be able to take advantage of. Looking at Lorient’s recent form though it looks like Lorient could well use their new found confidence to steam roller an out of form Angers side.
Toulouse v Caen (Saturday 7pm)
Toulouse (12th) are not in good spirits. Only 1 win from the previous 10 matches has seen them slip into the bottom half of the table. They have no worries of being relegated but the manager needs to start winning games again. They won’t get a better chance than this week as they face a Caen (18th) side who haven’t won in 8 games and have a few injury worries keeping them from full strength.
Both teams lack a scoring touch and average around 1 goal per game. But Toulouse do boast a much better defence. Toulouse will look to Danish striker Martin Braithwaite to get on the scoresheet this week and keep Caen in the relegation zone.
Take Toulouse to end their losing streak with a draw for safety in case they are misfiring in front of goal… as they tend to do!
Rennes v Montpellier (Sunday 2pm)
Rennes (9th) host Montpellier (12th) this week in a match which will determine which of these sides will finish in the top half of the table. There isn’t anything else to play for as both are too far behind the European places and neither are in any danger of relegation. Rennes have won once in 19 matches. That’s incredible as they sit 9th in the table.
This is mainly due to the fact that they are so hard to beat and in the same time frame they have drawn 11 of those games with 8 of them finishing 1-1. So, a 1-1 scoreline will be on all our tickets this week!
Montpellier are no strangers to scoring goals but have suffered 6 defeats in 8 lately. This makes it tough to predict how this match will go. Rennes will try to keep it tight but Montpellier have been known to be quite explosive in front of goal if the team is playing well.
We will be mixing it up with our selections in this game as either side are capable of a win, but knowing Rennes as we do it will probably finish 1-1!
Lyon v Nantes (Sunday 4pm)
An intriguing match on Sunday afternoon sees 4th place Lyon try to secure a Europa League spot by winning at home against 7th placed Nantes. Lyon are missing goal scoring sensation Alex Lacazette and were soundly beaten in their Europa League match against Ajax. In Ligue 1 they have been lacking recently. They were clear in 4th position until recently when they have only taken 7 points from the previous 7 matches.
Nantes on the other hand have been in great form with only 1 defeat from 7 and now have a real chance of European football next season if they can take all 3 points here.
If Lacazette is fully fit and plays in this game i can see Lyon winning. Otherwise it looks like a score draw so hedge your bets accordingly
Marseille v Nice (Sunday 8pm)
What a match to finish off this weeks pools! Marseille (6th) host Nice (3rd) in a match which should see some real quality football. Marseille are in good form as they chase that lucrative Europa League spot. They haven’t tasted defeat since February but have been a touch goal shy at times, causing them to draw half of those matches.
They face a Nice side who are full of confidence after a 3-1 home victory against PSG last week, which gives them a glimmer of hope to steal 2nd place in Ligue 1.
This is a tough match too though and Marseille at home are incredibly tough to beat. Nice are on fire with 8 wins and 5 draws in their last 13 matches. Although they are without their top striker in Plea, they have found the perfect replacement with a resurgent Mario Balotelli who has been firing in the goals.
